Objective & Background

Objective: To build a variety of balanced lunch meals that includes a main meal, snack/sides, and dessert, over a period of 20 working days.

Daily allowance limit: RM5/USD1.34/GBP0.84

Period: 22 June 2015 - 17 July 2015 or 20 days (Working days only. Weekends are not counted)

Reason: I was inspired by a blog that I read a few years back where a man decided to challenge himself by spending a very limited amount of money to survive everyday. Even these days, there are similar programmes being carried out in different parts of the world such as the "100 Yuan Challenge" in China and the "Live Below the Line" campaign carried out in Australia.

Thus, this makes me interested in exploring several ideas in the local Sarawakian context, such as:
1. Is it worth spending on single meals that are less balanced but cost more
2. It is possible to provide balanced meals to students and poor families, with a very limited budget
3. Will I feel healthier after going through this "diet" regime

In Malaysia, generally it is possible to have a meal for the price or RM5 at any local food outlet. However, these meals would sometimes only consist of a single dish. There are a few exceptions such as "economy" rice, as it is known locally, which serves a serving of rice with a couple of selected dishes.

Although there are meals like these easily available, i felt like these meals are sometimes too heavy in a hot and humid climate like Malaysia and they tend to make me feel sleepy after lunch hour. Hence, I would like to find out if I am able to source for lighter and balanced meals during the day, which do not make me feel sleepy after eating and are able to get me through the day without feeling hungry again.
